Car Accidents in Virginia

In 2023, there were 127,597 car accidents on Virginia roadways. That is almost a 5,000 increase compared to 2022, And, there was a 9,000 increase compared to 2021. More surprising was the 13,000 increase from 2020 to 2021. Added all together that is about a 22,000 increase in car crashes from 2020 to 2023.

In the course of these Virginia car accidents, 63,876 suffered an injury. Of those injuries, 7,488 people including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, suffered a serious injury.

Tragically, in 2023, 907 people died as a result of car accidents.

16.9 percent of all crashes in 2023 were attributed to distracted driving.

When A Distracted Driver Causes Serious Injury? What do I do?

Drivers owe a duty to other drivers to avoid needless harm. Whenever a person needlessly endangers another, harm is the likely outcome.

When you’ve been harmed, a personal injury case is the only option. While the law cannot undo the harm, the law can only provide compensation for your injuries.

After your car crash, you should do the following things:

  • Call the police and make a report of the accident
  • Take pictures of the accident scene and the vehicles involved in the wreck
  • Go to the hospital or urgent care to be checked out same day.
  • Follow up with your primary care doctor and explain your injuries
  • Follow up with a specialist who will treat your unique condition.

Further, you need to know a few things if you were injured by a tractor trailer, a drunk driver, or a distracted driver.

Our society has designed a set of rules of the road to protect our drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. These rules are established for the common good. When someone breaks these rules, your life changes in a heartbeat.

If you need help, we are here for you.

Some people just need information.

We often get calls from folks asking, “What is my case worth?” While that is hard for us to answer in a quick telephone conversation, we created a tool just for people to check out what their case is worth:

Some people need more help than our free information can give.

In many cases, the insurance company is calling you every day. Or maybe, they are pressuring you to settle before you are comfortable resolving your case. Sometimes, the adjusters are just downright mean and they accuse you of faking an injury.

In those situations, the only thing you may be able to do to stop that kind of bad behavior is to hire a Lynchburg car accident lawyer.

At Osterbind Law, we want our clients to get better physically. We will focus on everything else. If that is you, contact us now.

Let Us Help

Tragedy can strike at any moment.

Lynchburg car accidents may result in one of many difficult injuries.

The truth is that—at any given moment—tragedy is just one step away. You may fare well and suffer no injuries in that car wreck. But on the other hand, you may suffer one of these injuries:

Neck and Back Spinal Injuries

Spinal injuries to the neck or back are some of the most frequent injuries we see in car accidents. Usually, the force from the collision causes a person to jolt forward or to the side. That force pulls on ligaments in your spine that would not otherwise be damaged. Sometimes, the injury is not just to a ligament, but to a nerve. To properly treat these injuries, you have to make sure you are seeing the right doctor.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are caused by your brain striking the inside of your skull. There is a fluid that surrounds your brain which generally provides a cushion and protects your brain. But, when your head moves forward with any degree of force, the front of your brain moves forward and strikes the skull. Then your brain moves backward and strikes the back of your skull. This motion causes traumatic brain injuries. These injuries range in severity and can seriously affect your quality of life.

Shoulder Injuries

Depending on how the impact occurs, shoulder injuries from a car wreck can be very serious. Torn rotator cuffs, Superior Labrum Anterior Posterior (SLAP) tears, broken collar bones, etc. can significantly impact your daily life. The ability to use your arm is paramount for most people. If you have a physical job, but you can't use your arm, you will suffer lost wages and loss of earning capacity.

Hip Injuries

Often times, hip injuries are disguised as low back pain or groin pain. Doctors call this referred pain, in other words, the source of the pain is the hip, but it is referred to the lower back or the groin. The experts that we have worked with say that labral injuries are notoriously difficult to identify. In fact, one study noted that it takes 21 months on average and 3.3 different physicians to accurately diagnose these hip injuries. The degree of pain is usually significant.

Anke or Foot Injuries

It is not uncommon to see foot injuries depending on the mechanism of injury. Lisfranc injuries, compartment syndrome, or mid-foot fractures are common injuries after a car wreck. These injuries usually require surgery to correct and impose certain limitations to your daily life. Depending on the injury, your case may result in a permanent impairment and you are entitled to compensation for that permanent loss.

If you’ve suffered one of these injuries, you may be wondering

What Damages May I Recover?

  • Medical Expenses
  • Pain and Suffering
  • Inconvenience
  • Mental Anguish
  • Permanent Impairment or Disfigurement
  • Lost Wages
  • Lost Earning Capacity
  • Property Damage (car repairs, total loss, or diminution of value)
